I never thought I'd find myself here so soon, not after everything I've been through. But as I sit on the plush rug in Cole's cozy cabin, basking in the glimmer of the fireplace, I am starting to remember what it feels like to fall for someone. To trust someone again. It's a scary feeling, because those are the very things I swore to myself I'd never do again.
But something's different about Cole. It's too easy to be vulnerable around him, even if part of me is still screaming it's a dangerous thing to do. Still he's managing to break down my walls, brick by brick, revealing parts of me I didn't think I'd ever share with anyone again. Some things - I've never shared with anyone at all. Not even Alex, who demanded to have every part of me.
The cabin is starting to feel less like a prison, and more like a sanctuary. Here, with him, I'm safe. And it's easy to forget that danger might be stalking me from outside.
The soft crackling of the logs in the fireplace and the warm buzz of wine in my veins, mixed with the sight of Cole - who stands by the window, his dark hair framing his face as he stares out into the night... It makes the world feel like it can be good again. Even though just a few short weeks ago, I was convinced there was nothing good left in it for me.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" he says, his deep voice sending a wave of desire vibrating through my whole body.
I join him by his side, staring off at the distant twinkle of lights in town. It's turning colder each day, and everyone is starting to get ready for the holidays. Ethan should be able to take leave at the end of the year. That's what I was waiting for when I came here. But now? Now I'm not looking forward to his return as much as I was. I know as soon as he comes home, all of this between me and Cole is over.
"Yeah," I agree, my voice barely above a whisper. "It's so quiet out there. Lately, that would have been a scary thing for me. But tonight... it just looks peaceful."
I look up and catch him staring intently at me, his eyes washed over with a new kind of longing. It's softer this time. Less primal and urgent than it's been all the times before. I blush, feeling strangely exposed under his gaze. It's like every time our eyes meet, an electric current zips between us, pulling me closer to him with every passing moment.
"Come here," he says gently, extending his hand towards me. I hesitate, my heart pounding in my chest, before placing my hand in his.
As we stand there, fingers entwined, I can't help but think about how far we've come. From strangers thrown together by circumstance, to friends, and now...something more. I told myself if I ever felt this way again, I'd be cautious.
